Plaza Mayor

Below are some photos of the historic centre of Madrid at Plaza Mayor which were taken on a Sunday morning in February. The restaurants and cafeterias were just setting out their chairs and tables for the day (it was about 10.30am at this point). As it was a Sunday the market was on and a number of specialist sellers of coins, stamps and other collectibles had their stalls set out on high tables all around the perimeter of the square. The traders also included one vendor who specialised in bottle tops (doing a steady business I noted) and one popular hobby unique to Spain (I think) is the collection of lottery tickets. The Spanish love a lottery and the colourful billetas come in special editions around the country and can become sought after for various obscure reasons. In the tiny streets leading off the plaza there are also specialist shops trading in this paraphenalia.

"A gateway heralds the cobbled sanctuary of (...) Plaza Mayor. Here the old arcades have been restored and the balconies repainted in brilliant colours. There is a sense of grandeur and withheld pageantry. At the same time, however, there is no sign to inform tourists that it was here, in 1680, that one of the greatest autos de fe - or public inquisitorial trials - was held." - Toby Green, FT July 2007.
